German priests killed by Nazis move closer to beatification

Pope Benedict XVI has recognised three German Catholic priests who were killed by Nazis during World War II as martyrs, the Vatican announced on Thursday.

Diocesan priest Johannes Prassek of Luebeck and his two chaplains, Eduard Mueller and Hermann Lange, were killed in Hamburg on November 10, 1943 'in hatred of the faith,' a decree issued by the pope said.

The move clears the way for the three men to be beatified.

The Protestant pastor Karl Friedrich Stellbrink had also been killed alongside the Catholic clergymen for criticising the Nazis.
