

Friedrich Wetter is a native of Landau, Germany. He was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Speyer in 1953. He obtained a doctorate in theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, and taught theology as a professor in Germany until he was appointed bishop of Speyer in 1968.
In 1982, he was appointed the successor of Cardinal Ratzinger as archbishop of Munich and Freising. He was elevated to cardinal in 1985.
