Archbishop of Munich Retires

Benedict XVI accepted the resignation, for reasons of age, of Cardinal Friedrich Wetter, archbishop of Munich and Freising, who succeeded Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger in that office. The Vatican press office stated today that the Holy Father has yet to appoint a successor for Cardinal Wetter, who will be 79 on Feb. 20.

Friedrich Wetter is a native of Landau, Germany. He was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Speyer in 1953. He obtained a doctorate in theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, and taught theology as a professor in Germany until he was appointed bishop of Speyer in 1968.

In 1982, he was appointed the successor of Cardinal Ratzinger as archbishop of Munich and Freising. He was elevated to cardinal in 1985.
