Pope announces new church ministry

Pope Benedict XVI announced Monday in Rome that the Vatican will create a new Church ministry aimed at reviving the Christian faith in Catholic countries where it has been eroded by secularisation.

“I have decided to create a new body with the aim of promoting a renewed evangelism,” in countries that are going through” progressive secularisation of society” and an “eclipse of the meaning of God”, the pope said.

The Church has to face this challenge, the pontiff said, and “find the most adequate ways” of reviving the Catholic faith.

The new ministry, in the form of a Pontifical Council, will focus on countries with a long Catholic tradition, he said.

According to the religious news agency i.media, Italy’s Rino Fisichella, who heads the Pontifical Academy for Life, will be in charge of what will be a 12th Pontifical Council.
