A Polish archbishop says a cross in memory of the late president that has caused controversy by being placed on presidential palace grounds should be removed to end a lingering deadlock. The Archbishop of Krakow and former secretary to Pope John Paul II, Stanislaw Dziwisz, said Friday the wooden cross is being desecrated in front of the palace by people behaving improperly and should be moved to a church.
It was set up by Boy and Girl Scouts as a temporary memorial just days after President Lech Kaczynski, his wife Maria, and 94 other top state and military officials were killed in an April 10 plane crash.
Authorities want it removed but an attempt this month has been blocked by a small group of protesters, further aggravating the situation.
