Peter Jennings, the veteran spokesman for the Birmingham archdiocese, said that he had “never seen security like this.”
He was referring specifically to the plans for security around Cofton Park for the September 19 beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman.
Jennings made a point of saying that security is being coordinated by government officials, not Church organizers.
However Church organizers have released their own set of instructions to pilgrims who will attend papal ceremonies.
While recommending folding chairs and appropriate clothing to ward off sun and/or rain, the instructions warn that musical instruments and household pets will not be welcome.
Pilgrims are encouraged to bring food for the inevitable long waits, but barbecues will not be allowed.
