Cult Worshipers Suspected of Robbing Bulgarian Catholic Church

A brazen but untypical robbery of a the Catholic church in Bulgaria's Stara Zagora on New Year's Eve has raised suspicions that it might have been committed by worshipers of an anti-Christian cult.

The burglary in the Stara Zagora Catholic church features many characteristics that are untypical for a church robbery, according to Vesselin Kissiov, a theologian.

The robber or robbers stole only worship items – crosses, candles, six bottles with ritual wine and – what has been described as the most striking of all – a Holy Communion cup.

Kissiov points out that even though the church does not feature any expensive items, a "typical robber" would have stolen different objects.

"The burglary has most likely been committed to procure items for rituals in a religious anti-Christian cult as such cults are known to be practiced in Bulgaria," he explains while also pointing out that the police do not seem to have paid the case much attention and that there are no suspects at present.
