New Nuncio for Switzerland - And Appointments Within the Curia

The apostolic nuncio of the Czech Republic will now be representing the Pope in Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein.

Benedict XVI on Saturday appointed Archbishop Diego Causero, 71, to this new post.

He succeeds Archbishop Francesco Canalini, who has retired at age 75.

Archbishop Causero is a native of Italy. He was ordained a priest in 1963 and entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See a decade later.

He was named the apostolic nuncio to Chad in 1992 and went on to serve in Africa (in the Central African Republic and Congo) until 1999, when he was named to Syria.

He had served in the Czech Republic since 2004.
