Belgian church roof collapses just after Christmas Mass

Worshippers at The Regina Pacis church in Diepenbeek must have said their prayers -or someone was certainly listening - at their midnight mass service last night because just hours later the roof collapsed.

As this picture shows, had the churchgoers still been inside there would certainly have been mass casualties.

Only two walls - one bearing a crucifix - of the structure remain upright.

Disaster: The remains of the church of Lutsele, Diepenbeek in Belgium after the roof collapsedTonnes of rubble remain where the congregation sang carols and prayed just a few hours earlier.

The roof is believed to have given way under the huge weight of snow covering it.

Local residents report a huge crashing sound in the middle of the night when the roof gave way.
