Ecumenical Politics In Northern Ireland (??)

A coalition government between Catholic Sinn Fein and the pro-British Democratic Unionists looks increasingly likely for Northern Ireland.

The ongoing vote count has them neck and neck with about a third of the seats decided.

Last time London attempted to devolve power to Northern Ireland the assembly collapsed within a day.

The major players are hoping it will be different this time around.

"I want to see from Sinn Fein what the British government has promised us, that is a democratic party with no links to terrorism," insisted DUP leader, Ian Paisley.

The vote count will continue into this afternoon. Gerry Adams' seat is already assured and he is keen to start fulfilling expectations.

"Every one who has voted wants a devolution date of March 26, so let's get on and let's do it," he said.

The question on everyone's tongue is: Can these two former foes really work together?

Paisley, 81, insists his door is open, as long as Sinn Fein, the political ally of the IRA, forswears all violence.
