The Polish bishops’ conference has announced its strong support for a bid to amend the country’s constitution to protect unborn human life.
At the conclusion of a 2-day meeting, in which all of the country’s bishops participated, the president of the episcopal conference reported unanimous support for the amendment.
Archbishop Jozef Michalik of Przemysl said: “It is not only a question of religious convictions, but one of the dignity of man.”
The archbishop reported that the bishops’ conference would also support a proposal for similar protection of unborn life in the European constitution.
He said that the bishops agreed the European constitution should invoke God and should give explicit recognition in its preamble to the role of Christianity in shaping the culture of Europe.
