The Fener Orthodox patriarch from Istanbul, Bartholomew, flew to Vienna on Monday to receive an award for his contribution to "peace and unity" from the Austrian Catholic Church.
In a statement made shortly before his departure from Atatürk Airport, Patriarch Bartholomew thanked the Austrian Catholic Church which has, for three years, been giving awards to men of religion whose efforts contribute to peace and unity in the world in honor of the late cardinal of Vienna, König Preis.
He said he will also be received by top government officials during his visit to Austria, including the president and other government members.
He will also be attending dinners at the Greek and Vatican embassies in Austria.
Patriarch Bartholomew said he will be returning to Turkey on Friday following a visit to an orphanage and delivering a sermon.
