Never Mind The KKK - Bishop (Australia)

The Toowoomba diocese's Catholic Social Justice Commission says that people should be more concerned about Aboriginal health and education than with the distribution of a Ku Klax Klan recruitment brochure in the Queensland provincial city.

According to executive officer Dr Mark Copland, the Ku Klux Klan was not becoming a force in Toowoomba, The Catholic Leader reports. However, Dr Copland said Toowoomba does have other serious race related issues such as Aboriginal health and education.

Dr Copland's comments came after media reports last week that a Toowoomba grandmother had found a Ku Klux Klan recruiting brochure under the windscreen wiper of her parked car.

The brochure was headed "Become a Klansman or Klanswoman Today".Dr Copland, who had seen a copy of the brochure, said people needed to know it contained no references to Toowoomba."Contact details relate to America," he said.

Dr Copland said, however, that some alarming race related statistics should concern Toowoomba people."Close to a third of Year 7 Aboriginal children aren't reaching the national benchmarks for literacy and numeracy outcomes," he said.

"I believe this disadvantage goes a long way towards explaining that 60 per cent of juvenile justice orders are against young Aboriginals," Dr Copland concluded.
